In January, I was sworn into Santa Fe College Student Government. To be able to actively engage in student life and work in a department that I have a passion for was a great opportunity. My main reason for becoming senator was to improve the learning environment for students.
During this semester, I noticed the outdated periodic tables in the chemistry rooms as well as a lack of tutoring availability. The periodic tables were from 1998 and were missing some of the newer elements. Also, in terms of out of class help, there was no tutoring lab. After speaking with the head of the department, Dr. Sture Edvardsson, I was excited to bring my ideas to Senate. Dr Edvardsson and I discussed my concerns and fortunately, he had plans to setup a tutoring area. He also, advised me to start looking into different types of periodic tables to purchase for the classrooms.
In the following Senate meeting, I presented my idea to my fellow Senators. There were no objections to updating the periodic tables every ten years and implementing a tutoring center.
During the fall semester of 2016, I returned to Santa Fe College entering Chemistry 2 and Core Biology 1. My chemistry class had an updated periodic table. Also, the department was able to implement a new tutoring center. The center offered tutoring from different chemistry professors from the college as well as different students from the University of Florida who has strong skills in the Natural Sciences.
Personally, I benefit greatly from the tutoring center. Although, I didn't go to the center for help in Biology, I have had a great experience with the services for Chemistry. I was able to receive a different teaching approach from the other teachers and I found this new program to be extremely beneficial. I am very proud to have served my fellow students in a way that positively impacts their study tactics.
I would like to thank all of the members of Senate for their support!
